Spirit vs. Firebirds to open OHL season

Posted: Updated:
FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The ice heats up Wednesday night as hockey season begins in Mid-Michigan.

The I-75 rivalry is renewed as the Saginaw Spirit visit the Flint Firebirds in the season opener for both teams.

In addition to battling for bragging rights, the two teams separated by just 45 minutes also play for a traveling trophy called the I-75 Divide Cup.

Last season, Flint beat Saginaw in five of their eight matchups, so the Firebirds currently own the cup.

The Spirit will face some adversity to start the season as eight of their players won't suit up in the opener, because they are taking part in training camps with NHL teams.

TV5 will have pre-game coverage from the Dort Federal Event Center tonight before the puck drops between the Firebirds and Spirit.
