SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The 46th Annual NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet was held on Sept. 25, honoring the people who serve the Mid-Michigan community.

While at the event, at Horizons in Saginaw County, Flint Mayor Karen Weaver said the group has played a key role in helping Flint get back on its feet.

“It’s just so interesting because I’m here from Flint. And the NAACP has been one of our biggest advocates in this fight for clean water. It’s inspiring to be here with the NAACP because they’ve been with us every step of the way,” said Weaver.

The focus of the group continues to emphasis equal opportunity for all. But at the fundraiser they also touched on the importance of STEM learning for children, and getting people out to the polls to vote.

We caught up with Senator Debbie Stabenow who said the association helps Saginaw in big ways.

“The Saginaw NAACP has such an important voice. For all of the things we care about. In terms of economic equality and making sure we are moving forward,” said Stabenow.

Young professionals were recognized at the gala as those in the community who were nominated by their employers as leaders in the community.

Odail Thorns has been putting on the event for the past 11 years, and said this year they want people to head to the polls and vote. Even putting signs on all the tables.

They said pretty soon NAACP volunteers will be knocking on doors to remind everyone to do their part.

“Not who to vote for, but just get out there and vote,” said Chairman Thorns.

TV5’s own Frank Turner was the emcee for this year’s event.
