BRECKENRIDGE, MI (WNEM) -

A local family has found themselves in a tough situation with no transportation and a tough drive during the upcoming winter months.

They've sold everything they can but still need more to get their car up and running.

“We can't get anywhere it's not like I live in the city, I live out in the country,” Dee Gardner said.

Gardner and her husband, Mike, said they are struggling to get their vehicle up and running. With winter around the corner, they’re worried they won’t have a reliable source of transportation from their secluded home in Breckenridge.

“I’m in the middle of nowhere. I can’t rely on anyone to get me anywhere,” Dee Gardner said.

Mike and Dee said every single day is a gamble as to whether their 1999 Cutlass Ciera will even start.

“It doesn’t want to start at times. Going to town, it will work great and coming back it might die or just not want to start,” Mike Gardner said.

Both Mike and Dee are disabled and on a fixed income, so they said making it to their doctor's appointments is their biggest priority.

"My main eye doctor is down in Southfield, Michigan so I have to drive back and forth down there and it's hard for me to, ya know? Without a vehicle I can't make it,” Mike Gardner said.

The couple said they even had to resort to selling their own household items in order to earn money toward the vehicle.

"Very personal items to me that I've had for 30, 40 years. Since me and my husband met. It was hard to take off the wall,” Dee Gardner said.

Mike and Dee said they just want to be able to live a free life again, with a fixed and running, reliable vehicle.

"I'd be very thankful; I'd do the same if I could. I'd give the shirt off my back to help somebody else too,” Mike Gardner said.

The Garnders said they aren't sure specifically what is wrong with the car and can't afford to pay for a full diagnostic.

They are looking for someone that may be able to fix the car or donate a more reliable one.
