SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Speed zones are a hot topic when school is in session and there have been several complaints by TV5 viewers of speeding in school zones.

One reported problem area is near Nouvel Elementary School in Saginaw Township.

Police Lieutenant Rick Herren said speeding is not the big issue, it's congestion. Bumper to bumper traffic when parents drop off and pick up their kids from class.

"What happens is we have a little bit of conflict with the residents that their day becomes disrupted by this sudden influx of hundreds of vehicles into their subdivision,” Herren said.

Herren said he's heard these complaints and empathizes with the residents who live here, but he wants them to know these motorists aren't breaking any laws.

“We can't tell those parents they can't wait to pick up their children. It's just one of those things when you have a school that's in a subdivision you're going to have these kind of congestion problems,” Herren said.

He said a similar congested scenes play out throughout his jurisdiction and he wants folks to know his department is keeping an eye out for speeders too.

"The Saginaw Township Police Department Patrol Division is working our school zones with an eye for observing violations and stopping those violators and taking appropriate action in an effort to keep our kids safe,” Herron said.

If you have speeding complaint you would like to report in Saginaw Township you can call the police department at 989-793-2310.

Speeding in school zones is a reported issue in other Mid-Michigan counties as well.
