Local vet in desperate need gets help from community

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A local veteran in desperate need of a vehicle is finally getting help.

Lerae Sebenick’s bike just wasn’t enough to get around anymore. His wife is disabled and Sebenick has a bad back and leg from his time in the service.

With no car, it was difficult to make the 90-minute drive for his wife’s doctor appointments.

"If I could find a car, get a car, you know it would make us happy,” Sebenick told TV5.

Sebenick had no idea his life was about to change as he stood in front of his new car.

He thought he was doing a follow up story to continue reaching out for help.

Last month, TV5 told viewers about the disabled Vietnam vet who needed a car. Now, thanks to a gracious donor, the wheels he desperately needed are his.

You can imagine his surprise when we told him the news.

"Oh wow. You ain’t kidding me are you?" he asked.

Russ Dowis saw our story as he was sitting at home with his wife, Donna.

"I said, ‘You know that car that you want me to sell?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Remember that piece on the news?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘What do you think about me giving that car to that guy?’ And she said, ‘Oh my god I was thinking the same thing,’” Dowis explained.

The car wasn't road ready, though, and that’s where Roger Nowaczwk came in.

Nowaczwk owns Bottom Line Auto Repair. He did the work to get the vehicle in tip top shape, free of charge, with help from auto suppliers who gave Nowaczwk the parts for free.

"Makes you feel darn good to do it. It does. You know it's not about making money and everything all the time,” Nowaczwk said.

There was also a surprise in the trunk too. A little extra for a man who said he lives on just a little. All of this was a bit much for Sebenick to take in.

He said he appreciated all of the people who helped put him in his new ride.

"I just like to thank everybody for what you did and I appreciate it,” he said.
