Local man receives rare boy scout award

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A local man is about to receive an award that is rarely given out - the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.

Mike Weber has been involved in scouting for more than 50 years. He started out as a cub scout back in the 1960's.

"This award, the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, is really a phenomenal honor. I had no expectation of it,” Weber said.

This year, there's a fun event going on in Flint to get youngsters interested in scouting at the same age.

“So another experience we have for new boys, particularly the cub scout age, is called the Blast into Scouting. It's a recruiting effort that we have in the fall time frame and this year this is related to thinking about space, thinking about rockets,” Weber said.

Weber said scouting is always looking at ways to reach more youth.

“Scouting is all about helping to develop character, building leadership giving boys experience and developing skills and turning out good citizens,” Weber said.

Local scout leaders said Weber richly deserves scouting's highest award.

"Really been the lead volunteer in this area for a number of years,” Mike Chaffee said.

Weber will receive the award at a special dinner on October 15 at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
