Local credit union gathering supplies for troops

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

America's fighting men and women are the best equipped when it comes to battle but to enjoy some of the comforts of home they need the caring touch of some personal contributions.

"These items mean so much to them while they are overseas serving our country,” Teresa Cunningham with the Support our Troops Drive said.

Cunningham, who works at Security Credit Union, said things like baby wipes, chewing gum, DVDs, comic books, crossword puzzles and clothing items are a big hit.

“Bandanas, socks, those are the two major items or even something as simple as sunglasses, you know, dollar sunglasses,” Cunningham said.

Branch Manager Stephanie Heckroth aims at collecting quite a few items for the troops this year.

“My goal is always to get more donations than we had the previous year. I try to engage the community as much as possible and our membership base, they're always extremely generous,” Heckroth said. “The businesses in the community help us a great amount, partnering with our employees, some of the employees have made things to sell for this."

The troops obviously appreciate all the items that are sent to them and they’ve sent dozens of thank you letters over the years.

You can help donate such items.

Security Credit Union has collection boxes at its branches across Mid-Michigan. Donations will be accepted through Friday, October 21.

“It's a wonderful cause, and you just see how many lives it touches, it's just such a simple thing but it means so much,” Heckroth said.
