Debate sparks after woman hurt in police chase crash

Posted: Updated:

A man is still on the run after a police chase ended with an innocent woman hurt and a totaled police car.

Now, some are questioning whether police should chase suspects so close to a residential area.

“The chases? Too many people are getting hurt. For no reason at all,” Gary Delavern said.

Delavern’s wife has spent over a day in the hospital after a police officer smashed into the car she was riding in.

The officer was blazing through a stop sign to catch a suspect during a chase. It’s a chase Delavern said never should have happened.

“My wife and her cousin are both hurting. The police need to be more responsible,” Delavern said.

The Saginaw Police Department chief said sometimes officers just have to pursue a suspect. He said the suspect threatened to run a woman over with his car and that’s a situation they took very seriously.

However, the chase has sparked a lot of debate in the community whether or not it was the right call to make.

Some residents said officers should use more caution in residential areas, while others said they have faith in police department to make the right call.

Delavern said his wife has to stay another night in the hospital and possibly needs surgery.

The officer and driver are both resting at their homes at this point.

As for the suspect in the car chase, police are still looking for him.
