MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A local man’s battle with cancer will soon find him struggling to gain access to his own home.

"They discovered bone cancer on top of esophagus cancer,” Dan Dowker said.

Dowker, 56, is undergoing chemotherapy to battle the cancer he’s fighting. While he’s away receiving treatment out of state, his daughters Emily and Megan are trying to help out at home.

Doctors are going to place a rod in Dowker’s leg on October 17. When he gets home, the family hopes to have a new ramp in place.

“Honestly it would mean the world to us. We're the type of people, we do go out and help people whenever we can do it for other people, and just kind of nice to have the favor returned. And it's very much needed. I'm a strong little girl but I can't carry my dad up them stairs,” Megan Dowker said.

Dowker said he appreciates the help his neighbors have already given his family as he battles cancer.

“He's amazed. We've had a lot of people come out and clean up the yard and stuff and he is very grateful for it,” Megan Dowker said.
