Mid-Michigan couple in need of reliable transportation

Posted: Updated:
MT. MORRIS, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan couple struggles with a fixed income and continued health issues. On top of it all, they don't have the reliable transportation they need to get around.

Richard Long, 57, has plenty of room to sit in his Mt. Morris carport.  That's because Long and his wife Bernadette don't have a vehicle, and they sure could use one.

"My wife goes to therapy a lot, she's got fibromyalgia, asthma...she uses a walker, and I'm on disability as well, because of my back and bipolar,” Long said.

Bernadette is also legally blind and deaf.

Long is a 14-year army veteran who had to be discharged due to his disabilities.

The Longs said they aren't looking for a car that's expensive or fancy, they'd just like something they can count on to fill this driveway.

"We're just looking for a vehicle to get us from point A to point B, to do our grocery shopping, so we don't have to ask people for help because we're independent people. We're not looking to be dependent on others,” he said.

Long said because he and his wife depend on SSI they don’t have the money to buy a vehicle but they would have enough to pay for insurance and gasoline.
