Tom Benton said he always looked forward to the daily conversations he had with his daughter.

She was living in downstate while he lived in Gladwin.

The calls kept them close but the phone never rang on September 26.

“I wish I could hold her one last time. I would give my life today for hers, to have her come back,” Benton said.

Benton said he’s numb, trying to make sense of his daughter’s brutal murder.

Amanda Benton just recently moved to Melvindale from Gladwin. She was reported missing last week.

The 29-year-old was five months pregnant and a mother of four boys.

On Friday, police found her body burned in an abandoned home in southwest Detroit.

“She was fighting that demon but she did not deserve this. She did not deserve this, no one deserves this,” Benton said.

Amanda’s father admitted she struggled with a heroin addiction but said she was trying to get help.

There was mayhem outside the courthouse Thursday as a fight erupted after 23-year-old Jacob Barnes and 16-year-old Jeremy Lee were charged with her murder.

According to investigators, they put Amanda’s body in her own car and drove her to the abandoned home where they set her body on fire.

“For a car. A $200 car. It’s senseless. It’s senseless,” Benton said.

The senselessness leaves her four boys without their mother.

“My grandpa has been explaining I need to let out my feelings, but I don’t, so I think it’s going to be a rocky road but it’s just going to make us stronger,” said Thomas Benton, Amanda’s 11-year-old son.

Thomas said a lot of this doesn’t make sense to him but one thing does.

“My mom deserves justice. And they have them, and they’re probably being sentenced to life,” he said.

Just is what Tom Benton said will be only a piece of the healing process.

“They’ll never forget it, they’ll never forget it, but they’ll have plenty of people that will love them and help them,” he said.
