"It means life or death," said Anne Marie Breecher.

Anne Marie Breecher says fire prevention week is vital to her family's safety. that's why she brought her grandson Christopher to explore and learn at the Bay City Fire Department.

"To teach him about fire safety and about the fire trucks and stuff...and not to play with fire, he is fascinated with the fire trucks," said Anne Marie Breecher.
An open house was held Sunday at the bay city fire station.

Families came to learn the latest in fire safety techniques. Like how to make a fire escape plan.

Bay City Fire Chief Karrey Prieur says this event is imperative.

"We can reduce fire deaths by doing this. Kids are a good way to reach out to because they retain this stuff.

Once they get this in their memory they grow up with this philosophy," said Karrey Prieur.

Prieur says it's important to change your detectors every ten years.

Reece Rau says he wants to be a firefighter when he grows up. That's why he designed a fire safety poster. It won his name on a fire station plaque and got him picture with the chief.

"I learned about how to always have your fire alarms always working and to check them every year." said Reece Rau.

Breecher says she had a lot of fun playing on the fire trucks with her grandson, but more importantly she was reminded of a few things she needs to do.

"I just realized that I have to change my smoke detectors! It has been over 10 years! I never even realized that" said Anne Marie Breecher.
