Church celebrates 100 years

Posted: Updated:

A local landmark has reached a milestone.

“You know, a hundred years is a long time,” said Father Matthew-Peter Butrie of St. Nicholas Orthodox Christian Church. That’s the milestone the church reached this week - 100 years in the Flint area.

“It's pretty unbelievable,” said Amir Abu-Aita. “There's not many parishes that have been around here this long. Honestly, it's a blessing that God gave us the strength to keep going for 100 years.”

Historical document lined the hallway in the church during service this morning, reminding the believers of where their church originated.

“There were many immigrants coming to work for Buick, and they were getting work on the line,” said Father Matthew, “So, people came from Central Europe, Southern Europe, The Balkans, and they wanted to have church to continue worshipping Christ in the way they knew. So they scraped together some money and bought land and a church.”

So, the church has roots that's rich in Flint and Genesee County history, and now still plays a big role in the community.

“Our forefathers came here hoping for a better dream, better purpose,” said Abu-Aita, “The children of those fathers are here trying to continue that dream.

In the last 100 years, the church has moved twice, and now resides in Burton.

“Success in God's eyes is not in number, but how we serve one another,” said Father Matthew.
