Police: Woman hit, killed, while walking home from store

A Mid-Michigan woman has died after being hit by a car.

It happened on Saturday, Oct. 15 at around 7 p.m. on North Leroy Street in Fenton.

Sgt. Jason Slater said that 77-year-old Dorothy Orth was walking across the road in a southwest direction when she was hit by a Chrysler Town and Country heading south.

The Town and Country was in the outside lane, and the driver, a 64-year-old Grand Blanc man, said he tried to avoid her but there was a vehicle in the inside lane and he wasn’t able to swerve enough.

Orth was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center where she passed away at around 3 a.m. on Oct. 16.

Investigators believe Orth was returning home from a party store at the time of the accident.

There are no crosswalks in that area, but it is lit by street lights.

While the driver of the Town and Country stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, investigators are asking that if you saw what happened to give them a call at 810-629-5311.

No tickets were issued at the scene. Once the investigation is complete, findings will be turned over to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.
