MIDLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man was taken into custody Monday after police say he made several threats while sitting in the middle of the road with a rifle.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office were called about 11:21 a.m. on Oct. 17 to the 2400 block of North Magrudder Road in Geneva Township for reports of a distraught man with a rifle.

Investigators said the man had started drinking earlier in the morning and was upset after an argument with his wife.

The man threatened to commit suicide and to shoot any law enforcement who came to his home, police said.

While trying to make contact with the man by phone, police found the suspect was sitting in a chair in the middle of Magrudder Road while holding the rifle.

The Midland City Police SWAT team were then called to the scene. The Michigan State Police also responded with an armored vehicle.

Dispatchers made several attempts to contact the man but he would not surrender. SWAT then decided to approach the home with the armored vehicle where they took the man into custody without incident around 3:15 p.m.

The man is being held in the Midland County Jail.

He’s charged with possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Three firearms, two of which were 30.06 rifles and a twelve-gauge shotgun, were removed from the home.
