Horror movie set in Flint delivers message about bullying

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Mid-Michigan has its own version of an evil, fictional villain.

Legend has it that a crazed maniac named Captain Bubblegum occasionally stalks the area of Max Brandon Park on Flint's north side terrorizing children.

The legend is now getting its own movie.

If you grew up in Flint you've probably heard the urban legend of Captain Bubblegum. It's a frightening tale about a man who would abduct children from a local park.

Filmmaker Damieko Smith, a Flint native, decided to turn the tale into a movie. He said the horror movie is based on an actual person.

"Actually, they kind of bullied him and threw rocks at him and since he had the mind of a child he would actually chase them. So when he would chase them, he never caught any kids or did anything harmful to them, but the legend grew that if he caught you he would pull you in a house in Forest Park and bad things would happen to you," Smith said.

The urban legend takes place in Forest Park in Flint.

Smith also acts in the film with his two brothers. He said he's thankful for all of the hard work that went into the community-based film from everyone involved.

"First scene actually starts in Forest Park with a young girl getting chased by Captain Bubblegum. So it's a real intense first scene, but it took about a year," Smith said.

He said the movie isn't just about gore and horror, but it also has a message.

"So what we decided to do instead of just making a horror film about killing and stuff like that, we wanted to send a message and the message was that Captain Bubblegum would go after kids who bullied other children. So if you're a child and you bully other children, you gotta watch out for Captain Bubblegum," Smith said.

The film premieres Thursday, Oct. 20 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Greater Flint Arts Council.

Tickets are $10 a person.

The show begins each night at 8 p.m.
