MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

A report sheds new light on how much taxpayers are spending on private education.

According to the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, the state spent $86 million last academic year to educate private K-12 students.

It's part of a share-time program that gives extra aid to public schools that enroll private students in elective classes.

The $86 million is 51 percent more than what was spent in 2012, a $29 million increase in three years.

Meanwhile the number of shared time students increased from 7,700 to 11,000 in that same time, which is about a 46 percent increase.
