AUBURN, MI (WNEM) -

A former Midland Police Department patrolman is dead after hitting a deer on his motorcycle.

It happened around 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 near the Tri-City Speedway on Wheeler Road, west of 8 Mile Road in the Bay County community of Auburn.

Investigators believe 62-year-old William Kerr was driving east on Wheeler Road when he hit the deer in the road. It caused him to lose control and go off the south shoulder.

A state trooper found Kerr unresponsive when they arrived at the scene.

CPR was performed but was unsuccessful. Investigators said he was not wearing a helmet.

Kerr retired from the Midland Police Department as a patrolman. He was currently working as a lead court security officer for the Bay City Federal Courthouse.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
