Mom posts fliers around neighborhood to keep eye on son with autism

Posted: Updated:

A family reached out to their community by posting fliers around their neighborhood asking for help keeping track of their young son with autism.

"We get a phone call from the police saying that they found Michael jumping up and down on someone's pool cover in the backyard," said Kim Blazen, mother.

She said she found out her son Michael wandered away from their home. The 9-year-old boy can't talk and Blazen said he has wandered before.

The latest event happened on Saturday and was the final straw for the worried mother. She put out fliers wanting the community to be on the lookout for her son in case he disappears again.

"It was just really, really scary to know that he had left without our knowledge and you know the worst thing, you don't want someone to think you're a bad mother," Blazen said.

She said her son is attracted to water and cannot swim.

"At any moment he could decide he wants to swim and he loves the water and he loves to swim and just that thought is so awful. He could drown and I might not see my baby again," Blazen said.

To that end, the family has a GPS tracking device the Michael wears. The doors in the home are armed with a very loud alarm system to alert Blazen if anyone tries to leave the house.

Blazen said she now has the support of her Grand Blanc neighborhood.

"The response has just been so positive and people thank me that I've made this flier and they'll keep an eye out for him. And as a mom that just means so much that there are eyes and ears there when I can't be there all the time," Blazen said.
