SAGINAW, Mich. On Saturday, the Saginaw Spirit took on the Kingston Frontenacs at The Dow Event Center for their annual Pink Out night presented by St. Mary’s of Michigan. The Spirit were looking to avenge a 5-3 decision from earlier in the season against Kingston. Saginaw achieved its goal with a 3-2 victory over Kingston.

In the opening frame, the Spirit and Frontenacs exchanged penalties. At 10:26, Nathan Billitier was called for tripping. 36 seconds later, Damien Giroux was called for hooking which cancelled the Spirit power play. After some 4-on-4 play, Saginaw successfully defended Kingston’s brief power play getting back to even strength. The Frontenacs kept Evan Cormier busy, outshooting the Spirit, 10-3.

The second period was quite eventful. 23 seconds into the period, Linus Nyman scored his fourth goal of the season with a long pass from the neutral zone off of Zack Dorval’s stick. Five minutes later, Nyman scored again after a turnover in the Saginaw zone. Sergey Popov forced the turnover, and made the centering pass to Nyman. With nine minutes left, Damien Giroux scored his second goal of the season off of a rebound of a C.J. Garcia shot. Mitchell Stephens passed the puck to Giroux from behind the net, who advanced it to Garcia at the blue line. Giroux streaked towards the net, and shot it past Mario Peccia. At 16:13, Hayden Hodgson redirected a Filip Hronek shot from in front of the net. Kingston outshot the Spirit in the period, 13-6.

The Spirit came out of the second intermission with one objective. Score one more goal than the Frontenacs. It only took them 22 seconds to achieve their mission. Jesse Barwell scored his first goal of the year with the help of two Kingston defenders who stood in front of the net, and distracted Mario Peccia. A boarding penalty at 10:06 by Liam Murray gave the Spirit a shot at an insurance goal. The Frontenacs successfully killed the power play, and continued to set up shop in the Saginaw zone. Evan Cormier stood on his head, stopping 31 shots. The final shots on goal were 33-13 in Kingston’s favor, but the Spirit held on for a 3-2 victory, their first of the season at The Dow Event Center.
