Shelter animals free for a day

BAY CITY, MI (AP) -

The Bay County Animal Shelter had a goal to clear out their cages as part of the Empty the Shelters free adoption day event this weekend.

“It's an event sponsored by Bissel Pet Foundations out of Grand Rapids,” said Kathleen Hacker of Shelter Angel. “They're sponsoring all of the pets adopted today, so essentially, people adopt their best new friend for nothing.”

Crowds packed into the shelter to see the available animals, some that would have grim future without someone to give them a new home.

“Save them, so they don't get put to sleep,” said Holly Derr.

She brought her kids to pick out a new member of their family. One kid wanted a cat, and another wanted a dog. Whichever they chose, the animal was free for the day.

“A lot of places you have to pay for the neutering and spaying, and that’s a big chunk of money up front,” said Hacker. “While they have the money to care for them, like vet bills and food and love, they don't always have that big chunk up front. This takes care of that, and I think that's why people like that.”

Over 30 animals were adopted during this event at this location. Shelters all across Michigan took part in the event sponsored by Bissel Pet Foundation.

“A lot of the time, people say they were saving the pet, but the pet ended up saving them,” said Hacker.
