Couple fighting cancer together hold benefit

Posted: Updated:

A husband and wife going through life together are now both fighting for their lives in separate battles against cancer.

“You're not prepared to lose someone you love, and the chance you could lose them both is devastating,” said Jennifer Zielinski, Gerry Dailey daughter.

She chokes back her emotion when she thinks about her father and step-mom. Gerry is fighting pancreatic cancer, and not long after his diagnosis, they found out his wife, Kim, had colon cancer.

“It's been a tough go for our family,” said Gerry’s brother Jim Dailey. “A pretty heavy hit for him to have it, then Kim.”

We spoke with the couple's family, who are doing all they can to raise money for both their expenses.

Gerry and Kim are being treated at a cancer center in Chicago, and between traveling and medical bills, it's piling up fast. This weekend, their relatives hosted a spaghetti dinner benefit to help ease some of the financial burden.

“A lot of it is to show them how much support they have with their friends, family, and in the community,” said Zielinski.

Local businesses took to the benefit, a local restaurant called Juicy Bones provided the food, and Art Van gave a chair for the silent auction. All in all, the family say they’re amazed all the support the community is giving them for their family

We're all thankful if you can donate to this benefit for the money to donate to the airplane rides for my papa,” said his grandson, Porter.

Zielinski says any money raised they don't end up using for their expenses will be paid forward.

“They plan to donate part of the proceeds to the Children's Foundation out of Detroit. They're good people. Their hearts are huge. They adore little kids,” said Zielinski.

News like Gerry and Kim's is something no family wants to go through. But this tight-knit group-- who say they're Dailey strong-- say they are keeping their heads held high.

“Hopefully they'll all pull through and one day we'll all sit down and talk about it,” said Dailey.
