MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

Polio is a disease that impacts nearly 60,000 people each year. It can damage the nerves and can leave a person fully paralyzed.

So now, a charity group is partnering up with Grand Traverse Pie Company to raise money on Oct. 24 to help eliminate the deadly disease in an event called Pies for Polio.

During the one-day event, for each slice of pie sold, $1 will be donated. A $2 donation will be awarded for each whole pie sold.

The Midland company will donate proceeds from its pie sales to help The Rotary Foundation eliminate polio throughout the world.

Efforts to eliminate polio have helped save millions of lives globally.

"The road to ending polio has been a long one but Rotary is committed to seeing it through," Rotarian Kevin Kendrick said. "One benefit of this campaign has been the establishment of trained medical surveillance in other parts of the world which helps us as a global community to identify other diseases before they become too widespread."

Grand Traverse Pie Company is located at 2600 North Saginaw Road in Midland.
