Police officer helps stranded teen with flat tire

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A local teen found herself stranded on the side of a busy street with a flat tire without a spare.

A police officer came to her rescue and did something extraordinary. She got the driver the help she needed.

Janessa Mills had new tires installed on her older Ford Taurus on Monday. It's a new set of wheels she said was well over due.

The 17-year-old learned a lesson the hard way last Thursday.

"I heard a clunk on the driver's side and I immediately thought my wheel was going to fall off," Mills said.

Her driver's side rear tire blew out on Shattuck Road in Saginaw Township. Mills never had a flat before and to make matters worse, she didn't have a spare tire in her car.

"I sat there crying because I didn't know what to do," Mills said.

Saginaw Township Police Officer Beth Collison was on her way to lunch when she was Mills and her car on the side of the road. Collison stopped to see if she could help.

That's when Collison learned it would be a tough task to do anything with the absence of a spare, but she didn't abandon the teenager.

"I thought, 'oh I'm just going to give a wrecker company a call that we use in the area. Best towing, see if they have any spare tires from some old vehicles that they've impounded,'" Collison said.

The towing company found a donut spare that fit. They drove it over and even installed it for free.

"I honestly didn't think I was going to have no help. I mean I was sitting there and I didn't know what to do and then she saw me, pulled over to the side of the road. So it makes me feel good," Mills said.

Mills said Officer Collison is a hero for being there and helping her, but Collison said she was just doing her job.

"We are all in it together. We are one community. I got into this job to help people so if I could help one person at the end of the day it makes it worthwhile," Collison said.
