OAKLAND COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Two people are dead and three others hurt, including a small child, after a minivan crashed with a garbage truck in Oakland County.

It happened Monday, Oct. 24 about 8:30 p.m. on Ray Road near Oxford Road in Oxford Township.

Investigators said a 50-year-old Metamora Twp. man was driving a garbage truck on Ray Road when the truck had mechanical difficulties and the driver had to stop the vehicle in the road.

It was then that a minivan rear-ended the garbage truck.

The 43-year-old male driver of the van, from Oxford Twp., was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt.

The 43-year-old female passenger sitting behind the driver of the van was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

The front seat passenger, a 32-year-old Lapeer woman, was taken to the hospital and listed in serious condition.

A five-year-old boy seated behind the woman was also taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. Police said the man killed in the crash was the boy's father and the female passenger in the front seat is his mother.

The female passenger killed was a friend of the couple.

The garbage truck driver had only minor injuries.

Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

It remains under investigation.

No names have been released at this time.
