Community hopes to raise $50K to resurface boardwalk

A local group is working to polish a hidden treasure with improvements along one of its many rivers.

"It's a gem in Flushing that not too many people know about," said Anne Brimley, Flushing resident.

The Flint River may not be the first thing that comes to mind when residents think of a scenic landscape in Michigan, but Flushing residents said it's their best kept secret. That's why a campaign was started to rebuild their river-view trail boardwalk.

"The community has embraced this trail more than I could have ever imagined. So it's a great asset to the city and people love it. So if we love it, let's fund it," said Teresa Salem, city councilwoman.

The elevated boardwalk along the Flint River is a popular location for walkers, joggers and bikers.

"Due to the popularity of the boardwalk, it is showing a lot of wear," Salem said.

The current boardwalk is made with tongue and groove wood, but a new fundraising campaign calls for composite wood so it will have a longer life.

Flushing's boardwalk buildup has a crowdfunding goal of $50,000. That's in order to win a matching grant.

"The state will give us the matching funds of $50,000 to resurface the boardwalk in the spring of 2017," Salem said.

Salem, who has been involved with the trail for almost 20 years, said the located is underrated. However, the community values its landscape as much as she does.

"The changing of the seasons are just beautiful along the river and no one walk has the same view. It's beautiful," Brimley said.
