Sheriff urges people who see animal abuse to report it immediately

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell is urging citizens to report animal abuse as soon as they see it after an abused dog had to be put down.

Sheriff Pickell said a resident tipped off his office to a home with a severely neglected pit bull.

When deputies arrived, they found 8-year-old Midnight chained to a tree. They said he was so emaciated he couldn't stand. As the pictures show, Midnight had wounds all over his body and his spine and ribs protruded out.

Midnight was taken to a veterinarian, but, because of massive internal and external medical issues, he had to be put down. An autopsy confirmed severe starvation and a massive infection causing irreversible heart failure.

Sheriff Pickell said his deputies arrested the owner on animal cruelty charges yesterday. He hopes this story serves as a reminder to people to speak up as soon as they see an abused animal, "My hope is the next time we receive an abuse call, we are able to intervene early enough so we have a much different outcome."

Here is Sheriff Pickell's full statement on his Facebook page:

Today my office announced another truly heartbreaking animal abuse case. I am saddened to report, this case does not have a happy ending. Please be advised, the pictures in this post are disturbing.

Responding to a tip from a resident, our deputies were dispatched to a home where an 8 year old pitbull [sic] named Midnight was found, severely neglected and abused.

As you can see from the pictures, this dog was emaciated, with his spinal and rib bones visible. He was chained to a tree, with the chain around his neck. Due to his condition Midnight was unable to stand, and had open wounds on his body.

After being taken to a Veterinarian, Midnight was found to have massive external and internal medical conditions. The most severe of these was a massive infection causing irreversible heart failure. This condition was no longer treatable, and it was determined the only humane option was euthanasia. An autopsy of Midnight confirmed the starvation, and showed worms blocking blood flow in the heart, as well as blockages in his lungs.

A warrant was obtained from the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office, and my deputies arrested the owner for animal cruelty yesterday.

This case is another reminder of the depths of cruelty some have when dealing with the most vulnerable among us. The charges are clear, with the belief that the neglect and lack of basic medical care caused this dogs suffering, and ultimate death.

It is also a call to action, that those who see animal abuse and neglect should contact authorities so we can intervene as quickly as possible. Despite the outcome in this case, I believe we limited the pain and suffering of this dog as much as possible. My hope is the next time we receive an abuse call, we are able to intervene early enough so we have a much different outcome.
