PENSACOLA, FL (WKRG/CNN) -

There was a big scare at the Pensacola Interstate Fair on Tuesday afternoon.

A trainer at the tiger exhibit was sent to the hospital after being hurt by a 2-year-old Bengal tiger who got a little too playful during a show for elementary school children.

"And when she fell, he got on top of her right leg," trainer's assistance David Donnert said.

Donnert, the assistant and fiancée of the trainer, said what happened was simply an accident and not an attack. "No it wasn't a pounce, not an attack at all," he said.

According to Donnert, an initial fall by the trainer led to the tiger reacting in a playful manner.

"After he jumped, he kind of came close to her, so she pushed him over," he said. "He jumped the second hurdle, and as she was stepping back, she tripped over her own foot. She fell on her butt, and when she fell, he got on top of her right leg."

What was fun for the 2-year-old tiger landed the trainer in the hospital and undergoing a surgical procedure. With the scratches on her shin and thigh, the concern at this point is infection.

"They are going to go in and clean out the wound, which is very, very important when you get attacked by a carnivore because of what they have in their claws and teeth," Donnert said.

The assistant also tells me they make sure safety is the No. 1 priority, even so much they have signs to make sure the public knows not to cross the fence because they could enter into a dangerous situation.

"Because we have a lot of times that people come up and shake the fence and 'hey tiger, tiger, kitty kitty kitty,' but it was nothing like this at all," Donnert said. "And we have huge signs on our fencing all the way around saying don't do this, don't do that."

The shows to see the tiger will be cancelled for the remainder of the fair considering the injury of the trainer.

The Florida Wildlife Commission was on the scene to investigate. There's no word on whether the tiger will be put down because of the incident.
