SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A local private school student is facing trouble with the law after being caught with a weapon in their backpack.

The incident happened on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Francis Reh Academy on Owen Street in Saginaw.

School officials said at dismissal time a student came forward to report another student had brought a gun in their backpack to school.

The student told officials they reached into their classmate’s backpack to find a pencil and instead found the gun.

The backpack was confiscated immediately by administration and police were notified.

Officers later took the student into custody.

“At no time was there any threat made to any student or staff member; everyone is safe,” the school said in a letter sent to parents on Friday.

The letter also reminded families of the school’s zero tolerance policy regarding weapons.

“The consequences of bringing a weapon to campus will result in immediate notification of authorities and student expulsion,” the letter read.
