Could professional basketball be returning to downtown Detroit?

The Detroit Free Press reports spokespersons representing the Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and the Ilitch family have been talking to NBA and Detroit city officials over the past few weeks to finalize a deal to bring the professional basketball team back to downtown.

The spokespersons said they are still looking into what it would take to modify the still-under-construction Little Caesars Arena to accommodate the requirements of an NBA team.

The arena is currently being built for the Ilitch-owned Detroit Red Wings.

The Pistons are also considering other downtown locations for business offices and a multimillion-dollar practice facility, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Detroit officials in Oakland County said Tuesday they rejected a $385 million offer in June to buy the Palace of Auburn Hills, saying they were “acting in a fiscally responsible manner on behalf of taxpayers.”
