Halloween anti-arson patrols ready to go in several cities

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW, MI (AP) -

Volunteers are planning to patrol neighborhoods in several Michigan cities around Halloween to prevent intentionally set fires.

Saginaw officials say Arson Watch teams of residents and police and fire personnel will walk and drive through neighborhoods "from dusk to dawn" on Sunday and Monday.

The city asks all residents to be vigilant and to turn on lights outside their homes both nights.

Volunteers in Flint also will monitor neighborhoods both nights and report suspicious activity. Nearly 100 residents volunteered in 2015.

Detroit's three-day Angel's Night anti-arson campaign starts Saturday.

More than 4,000 people volunteered last year to help patrol Detroit streets and neighborhoods to curtail fires in vacant houses and buildings.

Only 52 fires were reported last year in Detroit compared to 97 in 2014.
