Spirit comeback falls short against Niagara

St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. On Thursday, the Saginaw Spirit looked to build upon its home win over Kingston on Saturday night with a game against the Niagara IceDogs. Niagara was coming off of a five-game winless streak. Although the Spirit had many more scoring opportunities than their opponents, the IceDogs won the game 5-3.

At 10:13 of the opening period, Johnny Corniel scored his third goal of the season for the IceDogs from the top of the left circle. Saginaw had three power plays, but couldn't capitalize on any of them. The Spirit led the IceDogs in shots on goal, 12-4.

In the next period, Saginaw earned four more power plays. However, they still couldn't get one past Niagara goaltender Stephen Dhillon. The IceDogs scored two more goals to push the score to 3-0. Matthew Philip scored his fourth goal of the season at 17:32, while Hayden Davis tallied his second goal of the year just 54 seconds later. Saginaw had nearly three times as many shots on goal in the stanza over Niagara, 17-6.

The Spirit headed a fierce comeback to tie the game up at 3-3. Brady Gilmour scored seven seconds into the third period to get the Spirit on the board. Just 1:30 later, Kris Bennett scored his first goal of the season from Tye Felhaber. At 9:01, Mitchell Stephens scored his second shorthanded goal of the season to bring the game back to even. However, the Niagara IceDogs capped the game off with two more goals. Oliver Castleman scored his third goal of the season at 13:23 and Christopher Paquette collected his seventh goal three minutes later. The final shots on goal favored the Spirit, 46-21.
