MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

When it comes to Halloween, kids will tell you it’s all about the candy.

However, nearly two kids in every classroom have food allergies – leaving millions of children unable to eat the candy they pick up on Halloween.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is trying to change that and raise awareness.

This year, trick-or-treaters might notice something special on front porches – teal pumpkins.

For trick-or-treaters with food allergies, it’s a sign that a home is handing out non-food treats.

“With one in 13 kids having a food allergy here in the U.S., chances are, that one of these kids’ lives right down your block,” Nancy Gregory with Food Allergy Research and Education said.

The number of homes participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project is growing.

The group behind it said their ultimate goal is to have one teal pumpkin on every block in America.
