Couple receives help filling propane tank to heat house

Posted: Updated:

A local family was trying to find a way to fill their propane tank before winter arrives.

Midland resident Cindy Harvey said it's been about a month that she and her husband have been heating the house solely with space heaters.

"We got a space heater in the bathroom pointed down the hall. One in the kitchen and we use the electric fireplace in the living room," Harvey said.

She said they close off the rooms they don't use, but are only able to get the house to around 60 degrees.

Harvey said they were in desperate need to have their LP gas tank filled before winter really hit and the temperatures dropped further, something they can't afford to do with only one income.

"Gas so we can heat the house and I can cook on a regular cook stove instead of a little burner," Harvey said.

She said it costs more than $400 to get the tank filled to heat their home for the winter. With her husband being the only one working full-time, she said they can't afford it.

Harvey said her mother-in-law is sick with double pneumonia and hasn't been able to stay with them since they don't have heat. The Harveys asked for help getting their LP tank filled and the temperatures up this season.

After the Harveys reached out to the Rescue Squad, their heating problems were solved.

TV5 received nearly a dozen calls offering help for the Harveys. One of those calls was from Ferrellgas in Bay City.

By mid-afternoon on Tuesday a company crew was busy replacing the Harvey's rusty tank with a new one the company will fill for free.

"We wanted to help them out, see what we could do. We do a lot of work in our community and this just seemed right," said Courtney Maxson, with Ferrellgas.

The Dague Dri Gas Company is Saginaw County also offered to help, even though it is well outside of the Harvey's service area.

Patty Dague wrote a check to the Harvey's new Ferrellgas account.

"I just thought it would be a good thing. It hit my heart," Dague said.

It hit the Harvey's landlord's heart too. He is cutting their December rent in half.
