CLARE, MI (WNEM) -

A 6-year-old girl is recovering after being shot by a 5-year-old boy.

Clare Police Chief Brian Gregory tells TV5 that on 10:35 a.m. on Oct. 31 a woman picked up her 6-year-old granddaughter and 5-year-old foster son from a home in Clare.

That’s when police say the 5-year-old found a holstered 9-millimeter gun in the door panel of the van.

The boy pulled the trigger while holding his other hand in front of the barrel and the round passed through his hand and into the girl, according to police.

The injuries were not life-threatening and the children are set to be released from the hospital on Nov. 1.

The gun was registered to another family member, and the grandmother said she didn’t know it was in the van.

A report is being sent to the Clare County Prosecutor’s office this week.
