SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Food has arrived for struggling college students at Saginaw Valley State University.

It's part of a popular trend popping up on campuses across the country.

"If they're going hungry we want them to be able to get the food that they need," said J.J. Boehm, spokesperson for the university. "This is a growing trend nationwide as more and more costs are shifted to students and their families. They're facing a greater financial burden."

Boehm said many students have to decide between paying for school supplies or food.

SVSU is one of several Michigan universities to launch a student food pantry on campus. Student organizations have been essential in stocking the food pantry as well.

Teresa Brechting, president of the Student Nurses Association, said it's important to have this type of support on campus.

"We wanted to make sure that all of the students on campus were able to have enough food because as health professionals we really care about the health and wellness of our community. So we figured we could start at SVSU," Brechting said.

Food pantry requests by students are confidential and informal. Boehm said they want any student who needs help to feel comfortable asking for it.

"Something like a food pantry can go a long way towards making sure students are able to get the food that they need to be able to not be hungry while sitting in class," Boehm said.
