Residents dumping trash at city park becomes problem

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Volunteers combed through Saginaw's Wickes Park all summer to clean up trash that was dumped there.

However, it didn't take long for that trash to find its way back.

"It's where you children should be playing, walking and having a good time. You know, walking and exercising, but definitely not dumping your trash," said Annie Boensch, member of the Saginaw City Council.

She said the city is trying to stay on top of the problem.

"Our city staff is doing the absolute best they can do with the resources they have to maintain our parks. And if you go over to Wickes Park it's well-maintained. It's a beautiful place to have in the middle of your city," Boensch said.

She said it's not that the city isn't taking care of its parks, it's the residents that are abusing them. People have been purposely dumping bulk items like chairs and couches at the park.

"There are alternatives. You can also drive things out to the dump I believe at any time so there's really no excuse for citizens to be doing this," Boensch said.
