FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A well-known environmental activist, whose life was portrayed in a 2000 film bearing her name, was in Mid-Michigan to advocate for change.

Erin Brockovich has been an active voice in the ongoing water crisis and she visited Flint for the first time on Wednesday. She was the keynote speaker for the YWCA luncheon.

"Beyond a shadow of doubt you have become a role model for the entire nation to watch as you handle your water crisis and you deal with the issues in Flint. You absolutely, 100 percent have hope and you will get through this," Brockovich told the crowd.

She had lunch with Congressman Dan Kildee and more than 500 other Flint community members to discuss how women can be advocates in their neighborhoods.

Heidi McAra, CEO of the YWCA, was thrilled to get Brockovich to Flint. She said Brockovish is a shining example of how Flint residents can fight for their city.

"Her message of empowerment is actually in line with our message of empowerment. And rising up and taking a stand and finding a voice for your community. And that is exactly what we are emboldening our clients to do," McAra said.

Proceeds from the annual YWCA Circle Luncheon go to combating domestic violence and sexual assault in the area.

Heather Kale said this sends a great message about Flint to the rest of the country.

"There are a lot of great things going on in this community, other than the negative and so it's great to bring her here to focus on the positive," Kale said.

On top of a laundry list of challenges the city faces, Brockovich told the crowd to be strong.

"Don't look for any Superman to come in and save you or me. Look to yourself. Look to each other. Look to your community. And I guarantee you, no matter what you face you will conquer," she said.
