Former President Bill Clinton makes surprise Michigan visit

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WNEM) -

Just days before the election and as polls show an ever tightening presidential race, the campaigns are pulling out all of the stops.

On Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton made an unannounced stop in Detroit.

Clinton had a private meeting with black ministers, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and other Democratic leaders in an effort to boost African-American turnout on election day.

The former president's trip to the state comes just ahead of Hillary Clinton's own planned visit to Detroit on Friday.

It also comes as Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, makes a hard push for the state.

Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel didn't look to favorably upon the former President's visit.

She released this statement regarding the visit tonight:

“It seems fitting that a family that works as hard as the Clinton’s to avoid transparency would keep even a campaign stop a secret from the voters. However, given Bill’s dealings with the Clinton Foundation and ‘Bill Clinton, Inc.,’ we shouldn't expect much better from a potential Hillary Clinton White House."

Michigan hasn't backed a Republican presidential candidate since 1988.
