Event sends Santa to our troops

Another Christmas kick-off was underway in Saginaw County.

Friday and Saturday, the Yellow Ribbon Guard had plans to collect goods and money to Send Santa to the Troops."

"You have to. You can't allow bad situations to control your life. It's about becoming better, not bitter," said Melissa Alex, co-founder of the Yellow Ribbon Guard.

The Yellow Ribbon Guard is a non-profit organization serving Mid-Michigan through the Bay County Vietnam Veterans Monument Committee.

Alex lost her husband while he was in active duty. Since then she decided to give back to the people whom she said became family.

"I was a military wife for 10 years and this was just, this is important to me because these guys and gals that are deployed are my family. They weren't just my friends they were my family while we were active duty," Alex said.

To support her Michigan military family, the Yellow Ribbon Guard held a holiday care package drive to send a little Christmas cheer to our troops.

Alex said it's about supporting the nation's entire military network with a special emphasis on Mid-Michigan.

"They are our first priority because the money is coming from the people that live here. The projects coming here, but we definitely never turn down an APO or AE address for a deployed soldier," Alex said.

With a list of almost 600 soldiers and counting, collections began on Friday for snacks, hygiene products and decorations.

The Yellow Ribbon Guard Stuff the Bus weekend takes place Nov. 18 to 21 at three different locations throughout Mid-Michigan in hopes to literally send Santa to the troops.

"It's just a good way of giving back and what better way than to support your military personal," Alex said.
