Authorities say a 14-year-old girl has been struck and killed by an SUV while crossing a road to get to school in suburban Detroit.

The Macomb County sheriff's department says a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16-year-old girl en route to Dakota High School in Macomb Township struck Victoria Cartwright. According to preliminary reports, Victoria was heading to the same school.

The department says the Macomb Township girl was taken to a hospital, where she died.

The driver had a 16-year-old passenger in the SUV and the sheriff's department says they weren't injured. The crash is under investigation.
