ST. LOUIS, MI (WNEM) -

Students at a Mid-Michigan school participated in a project dedicated to veterans.

It's a research project allowing students to get to know a local veteran and how they served their country.

The seventh and eighth graders were supposed to find out as much as possible about the family member or friend who served in the military.

Reece Giles decided to research John Root. Root served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1982.

"I think it was a great experience finding out about my great grandfather that I never really knew," Reece said.

Teachers Gayle Janasik and Homero Trevino take turns coordinating the program because they are both veterans. Janasik started the program 10 years ago.

A local veteran attended the class on Friday to talk with one of the students interviewing him. David Lessen served in the Persian Gulf with the U.S. Navy.

"I think that it's awesome that the kids do it because they get to know what active duty military does and it's something to look forward to in the future for them," Lessen said.
