SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw Spirit and their fans showed support for our troops over the weekend at a special event.

"Awareness, support, volunteer work. America. Freedom," said Corey Waiters.

Veteran food pantry volunteer Corey Waiters was talking about Spirit Hockey Military Appreciation Night at The Dow Event Center.  It was all thanks to the the Bay City Elks Lodge.

"We are saying thank to our troops. Thank you for your service," Waiters said.

Right before the Saginaw Spirit took the ice Saturday, veterans and volunteers came to the special event. It provided a slew of programs that are available to those who have served our country.

"Thank the people who are still out there. I have other family that are in the military, Marines, air force. It's just important to say thank you," said Diane Dirk.

The Michigan Warriors hockey program set up shop as well to recruit disabled veterans to their league. Jason Gomez said through sponsorships and private donations, vets can play for free.

"Bringing back that team military, team feeling and moving as a team together - that you miss when you retire when you get out or end service," said Jason Gomez.

With Veterans Day less than a week away and the holidays fast approaching, Waiters wants everyone to be reminded of the people who have fought and are fighting for our country.

"All types of communities, genders, races. We just want the word to get out," Waiters said.
