Clinton campaign battles for votes in Flint

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Democrats were forced to spend quality time trying to secure Michigan’s electoral votes as polls show Donald Trump closing the gap.

Former President Bill Clinton visited Grace Emmanuel Church in Flint as part of his two Sunday stops on behalf of his wife, Hillary Clinton.

"Tuesday is maybe the only day that every American can be just a powerful as the president. Just as powerful as the richest billionaire,” Bill Clinton said.

Before heading to his second stop in Lansing, Clinton reminded the congregation that Hillary was the first to respond to the water crisis in Flint and that her administration will make ending it a top priority.

He said his wife supported the city of Flint long before anyone else was paying attention to what has become an on-going water crisis after lead contaminated the city's water supply.

“When Flint was in trouble she came. Before others did and she stayed after others had gone,” Bill Clinton said.

Flint residents who heard the former president speak said his visit is a continuation of support from the Clintons during the water crisis and a showing they didn’t see from Donald Trump until September.

"I thank him for reminding Flint that Hillary did stand up. She was one of the first to respond, as a first responder, and I thank her for that,” Joel Rush, a Flint resident said.

Clinton's goal was to help energize a state that hasn't voted for a Republican president since 1988 - a task supporters said he achieved.

"It was exciting, it was over the top, outside of the Spirit of the Holy Ghost being in here today, that was the next best thing,” Sheila Graham said.

The Clinton camp is fighting tooth and nail to hang onto Michigan.

Both Hillary Clinton and President Obama will make stops in Michigan on Monday.
