FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Pre-natal care is very important and yet it's nowhere near the priority it should be for many expectant mothers.

It’s why staying healthy and preparing for the birth of a baby is a task the local chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority has made into an initiative.

"Being in partnership with the March of Dimes we're trying to prevent infant mortality and premature births,” Pamela Hawkins said.

The sorority hosted a Stepping for Babies walk-a-thon and baby shower on Saturday to gather much needed items for pregnant mothers.

The mothers can receive free baby supplies like clothing, bibs, blankets, car seats, children books, and cribs in exchange for doing things like taking regular trips to the doctor, not smoking and eat meals that are good them and their baby.

"You'd be surprised. They'll walk in with Dr. Pepper and a bag of Flaming Hot Cheetos and so we are trying to teach them how to eat notoriously because they are eating for not just themselves but for the baby,” Hawkins said.

With each donation given and class taken they hope to lower rate of stillborn and infant deaths - a problem that particularly stands out among black and Hispanic women with low income.

"We can have these healthy babies. We don't want our babies to be stillborn. We don't want that. We want all the babies to be healthy,” Billie Edwards said.

If you would like to donate to the cause, there is still time.
