GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WNEM) -

A state senator has proposed a bill to create a new Michigan flag design.

WZZM-TV reports Democratic state Sen. Steven M. Bieda of Warren introduced the bill Wednesday. It proposes enacting a flag commission, which will control a state flag design contest.

The bill says the flag commission will accept design submissions between Jan. 26, 2018, and July 26, 2018. The current state flag design will stand until Dec. 31, 2018, but the flag will have a new design Jan. 1, 2019.

The bill proposes the commission consist of a variety of people, including artists, historians, and representatives from the art and design programs from Michigan colleges.

Submission must be an original work of the person submitting, and its reverse side must be a mirror image of the front.
