Urgent need for O-Negative blood

Posted: Updated:

O-negative blood is often referred to as the universal blood type. It is what doctors most often turn to for surgeries or transfusion and it is in short supply.

Michigan Blood is the sole provider of blood and blood products for more than 60 hospitals in Michigan including Covenant HealthCare, St. Mary’s of Michigan and Mid-Michigan Health.

Michigan Blood’s hospital partners are doing all they can to conserve O-negative blood, but the need will only increase as the holiday season approaches.

"Local hospitals need your help to ensure a safe blood supply," said Jim Wilson, president of Michigan Blood. "You can make that difference."

Michigan Blood is offering a $10 gift card to either Meijer or Kohl’s to O-negative blood donors who come in between now and Nov. 15.
