Friday was Veteran's Day and people everywhere celebrated with services and tributes to the country's heroes.

A special ceremony was held at the U.S.S. Edson on the Saginaw River in Bay City.

"When a lot of these guys came back from Vietnam they didn't get the respect they should've got. Even myself, I wouldn't wear the uniform out because we weren't welcome," said Michael Kegley, served in the Navy.

There was a time in this country when America's veterans were not always welcomed with open arms. It is still a vivid memory for some who have served.

"For the longest time veterans wouldn't talk to other people because they didn't understand the situation, especially Vietnam veterans. They were kind of like forgotten people, kinda like the guys from Korea," said Jim Reha, served in the Army.

In Bay City, Friday was a day to cherish those veterans who are still alive.

"That's the difference between Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the day to remember those that served and are no longer with us, who maybe were killed in action. Veteran's Day is really more of a celebration of those that are still with us today that have served or are still serving," said Brett Holt, served in the Navy.

Covenant HealthCare provided free health screenings for every veteran who attended the ceremony. Organizers said honoring veterans means caring for veterans during and after their service.

"The fact that community is willing to come out and realize that veterans are going to need those special services. They have issues that are different from everybody else and for the community to realize that, to rally around them is fantastic. And we're seeing more and more of that," Kegley said.
