Midland woman saves dog scheduled to be put down

Posted: Updated:

A caring canine on the east coast was just hours from being put down, but a Mid-Michigan woman stepped up to not only save his life but also give him a loving home.

Dax the dog used to live in North Carolina, but now he calls Midland home.

Suzanne Church, animal rescue advocate and Midland resident, heard about Dax and wanted to help.

"He was in really bad shape. He had one eye almost completely shut closed. He was dirty. He still has the callouses on all of his joints, on his knees and stuff," Church said.

Dax is an English point-setter. He was on the verge of being put down after getting dropped off anonymously at an over-flowing shelter in North Carolina.

"They dropped him off at a high-kill shelter. He had 72 hours to live so there was a note saying they could not afford to take care of Dax anymore," Church said.

She and volunteers with the Pointer Rescue organization and doobert.com teamed up to save Dax's life.

"Doobert.com helped us with rescuing Dax by helping us with transport. Transport is actually like the life blood of rescue because if we don't have a way to get them from point A to point B, they're not going to get saved," Church said.

After the two day, almost 800 mile trip, Dax made it to Midland safe and sound to his foster home. Now he's on the look out for his forever home.

Church said Dax is an entirely new dog since his rescue. She has a 5-year-old son who adores him and said Dax is good with kids.

"We always say that if you pull a dog out of a shelter, you're saving two dogs because you're giving room for the next one to come in and you're saving the one you just pulled," Church said.
