GENESEE TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A 9-year-old boy died over the weekend after he was involved in a house fire Friday.

The fire broke out at a home on the 1100 block of E. Cass Avenue in Genesee Township about 5:45 p.m.

The 9-year-old, who had autism, was home with his 10-year-old brother and their grandmother.

The fire started on the couch and the grandmother attempted to drag the burning couch out of the house, Police Chief John Mullaly said. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Fire crews and police officers arrived to the house within minutes of the fire starting. Upon arrival they learned the 9-year-old boy was still in the house. Officials had him out of the house within 15 minutes, Mullaly said.

The two boys and their grandmother were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The grandma and the 10-year-old were treated and released.

The 9-year-old was taken to Detroit Mercy and then to a Grand Rapids facility. He had about 20 percent burns on his body, Mullaly said.

He was on an incubator and died over the weekend.
